The library in John Day was started 90 years ago by community volunteers and has operated in basements, the city jail and even the mortuary.

Our original book collection was donated by John Day residents and in 1956, the land, building and even the bookmobile were donated by local ranchers Herman and Eliza Oliver.

“A library is the primary cultural need of the county… particularly of the children.”

—Herman Oliver

The hard work, funding and tenacity of residents began and built our first library: it’s time to carry on this Grant County tradition.
